Soviet engineers were able to edit image with their indigenous technology much before the release of the Photoshop 1.0 . In the video shown below, you can see that how the Soviets went about restoring damaged images with the help of rotary scanners, magnetic tape, and trackballs.

The most awesome example of photo editing by Russians was one where Nikolai Yezhov, an NKVD leader, who was seen standing alongside Stalin in a picture taken on 1920 was edited out of the photograph after his execution in 1940. See the original and the edited images given below.
