1. Go to Settings

2. Scroll to Backup and tap on it to open it.

3. Tap on the Apps + Settings now. You will find separate options for Settings backup and App backup.

4. You can toggle the slider on or off to start the automatic backup process for the Settings backup and App backup. Keep in mind that to turn on the App Backup, you need to turn on the Settings Backup first.

5. Under the Settings backup, you can have the backup of Internet Explorer browser favorites, Start screen layout and color,call logs, passwords, custom words you have added to the dictionary and rest of the settings to your OneDrive account.

6. App Backup option let you save the top high score, game progress, settings etc to OneDrive. You may find that not all of the apps or games are supported yet for this feature. But hopefully developers will start including compatibility for this feature in their apps soon.

HOW TO : Backup and Restore Messages in Windows Phone 8.1


1. Go to Settings and then Backup.

2. Now tap on the Text Messages .

3. Go to the Text Message Backup section and toggle the slider to turn on the backup.

You can also select the duration of which you would like your messages to be backed up like messages received in the past month, one year etc.

1. Just like the above two, go to Settings and then tap on the Backup.

2. Now tap on the Photos + Videos to open it.

3. On the new page, you will find three options for backing up your images and two options for the backup of videos on OneDrive cloud storage.

4. Select either the Good Quality or Best Quality for the photos backup, according to your preference. For videos, the default OneDrive backup option is in best quality.

You can turn on the backup of the images and videos separately too. So, if you think your videos are huge in file size and you wouldn’t like to upload them on OneDrive then you can just select the Don’t Upload option.

1. On your new Windows Phone 8.1 device or the same old device after resetting , sign in using the same Microsoft account which you have used earlier to backup your Windows Phone 8.1 phone data and settings.

2. It will ask you to restore your device, just select the data which you would like to be restored from the backup and tap the Next button.

3. Wait for the restoring process to be completed and you are done.
