There's Only One Month Left to Claim Your Free Windows 10 Upgrade! Here's Why You Should Upgrade to Windows 10 Right Now
It has been quite a long time since the Windows 10 was released officially for PC’s on July 29th last year. Earlier the official release Microsoft clearly stated that, the upgrade will be free for all Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 devices regardless it is a pirated or a genuine copy. But but wait! As many of you already know, the upgrade will be free only till the first year of the official launch.
THE JOURNEY OF WINDOWS 10 SO FAR
In between this 11 months’ time period Microsoft has updated the operating system many times with new builds which contained UI refreshments, stability and performance improvements and also bug fixes. 300 million people have already upgraded to Windows.
But there’s still a large number of people around the globe who are using Microsoft’s older operating systems and are confused whether to upgrade to Windows 10 or they should use their current primary operating system, Well to clear this confusion, I’m writing this article and I hope it will be able to help you. So, let’s start…here's a few reasons to grab the free Windows 10 upgrade till it's free!
NEW UNIVERSAL APPS TAKING OVER THE WEBSITES
With Windows 10 installed on your PC you get access to thousands of universal apps, which can help you in many ways. The new universal app system is great and can sync data between your phone (Windows Phone only) and PC. As a consumer the feature which I like most of universal app is when you buy an app through your phone, at the same time you also acquire the app for PC too and vice versa.
The class of apps which are used in universal apps make this happen and for the developers it is now more easy to make an app for both phone and PC as both the apps now share up to 80% of same codes, so it’s a lot easier and cheaper now.
One of my favorite Windows 10 universal apps are the new Facebook and Messenger apps. Other than those, there are Tubecast, Groove Music, Skype and a few more, for example, earlier I used the Facebook Web on my PC but now Facebook App is helping me to get rid of that and also the new messenger app is useful too.
HEY! CORTANA
Remember the Build 2014 event? When Cortana launched for Windows Phone 8.1 devices? Yes, your personal assistant Cortana is now on Windows 10 too and not only that Cortana is a lot smarter now. Through the search box beside the start button you can now command, ask or search anything with the help of Cortana.
The best part about Cortana is it is always synced with your phone. If your phone has Cortana you can send text messages directly from your PC using Cortana, Cortana on your PC also notifies you about the missed calls on your phones and not only that you can also add a reminder on your PC and get that on your phone too (and vice versa).
DIRECTX 12 – A BLESSING FOR THE PC GAMERS
With DirectX 12, PC gamers get another new feature update which enhances their gaming experiences. According to Intel and Microsoft DirectX 12 can help GPU’s save 50% or more power at times and also get better performance which gives more FPS counts for DirectX 12 enabled games. Well, to use DirectX 12 you will also need a DirectX 12 enabled, most GPU launched in the recent times support DirectX 12.
For your info, in a test Battlefield 4 performed 58% better with DirectX 12 than DirectX 11, almost same numbers of performance boost was noticed with Rise of the Tomb Raider too. So, if you are a serious gamer and haven’t upgraded to Windows 10 yet, this is the time.
FREE UPDATES FOR REST OF THE LIFE
Microsoft introduced Windows 10 as a service and yes! If you remember, they also said Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows. So what does it mean? It means, without making a new operating system in every 4-5 years with new features they will be pushing new features through updates of Windows 10.
For example, Windows 10 was released in last year’s July and in this time period we got a very big update around November (which was named November Update) and another one the Windows 10 Anniversary update which is due in July this year will be coming soon. So this is what is Microsoft doing with ‘Windows as a service’ without making another new operating system they are pushing the updates in the existing Windows 10 for free
NEW UI or OLD? WHATEVER! LOOKS NICE
When Windows 8 was released back in 2012 Microsoft removed a lot of features which users liked on Windows 7, they removed the Start button (however which came back with Windows 8.1), they changed the start menu, glass like Windows Aero effects and more. But now, with Windows 10, we have the ability to use the Start Menu like the old Windows 7 or even like Windows 8/8.1 (in tablet mode), there’s the transparent glass like Windows Aero effects are back. I personally like what Microsoft has done with Windows 10 as there’s the modern features of Windows 8’s start menu and also the best look of Windows 7’s start menu; both are combined in a beautiful manner.
Other than the start menu, there’s change in the Control Panel, for people who are not very familiar with Windows Control Panel was a bit complex but now Microsoft has the settings option which is simple and easy to use. Also I liked the fact that Microsoft didn’t removed the old control panel, I still find control panel useful with a lots of settings tweaks within it.
The Action Center is next in the list, with Action Center you can get the notifications from your Windows 10 apps and with single click (or touch) you can open the app and see them below. The quick toggles are also very useful, as it is now a lot easier and faster too connect to Wi-Fi, a Bluetooth enable device or project your screen to an external monitor with just a single tap or click. There’s also virtual desktops too, just like you get in a Mac OS X or Linux.
CONCLUSION
In this article I just wrote about the most important reasons why you should upgrade to Windows 10, well there’s a lot more just than this but it won’t be possible to write about everything in an article. And yes! There’s a few bugs too, it is impossible to make an Operating System without any bugs or problems but believe me the engineers of Microsoft are working hard and in this 11 months they have fixed most of the bugs.
With the Windows Insider programme they have taken it to a step forward and they are pre fixing the bugs in new builds, ahead of public release. Personally, I am using Windows 10 even before the public release (as a Windows Insider) and I’m quite happy and haven’t felt any performance issues in the recent times.
So, if you are still confused whether to hold on to Windows 7/ Windows 8.1, I would recommend you to give Windows 10 a try and if you don’t like Windows 10, you can revert back to your current Operating System within 30 days.
Have you upgraded to Windows 10? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Here's What's New:
Microsoft Wallet with Tap to Pay: We heard your feedback about how much you wanted this and as announced earlier today, tap to pay with Microsoft Wallet is now available to Windows Insiders (Build 14360 or higher). Microsoft Wallet is a cloud-based payment technology that will make mobile payments simple and more secure for Windows 10 Mobile devices, starting in the U.S. with our Lumia 950, 950 XL and 650, and usable in over a million retail locations; anywhere you see the contactless payment symbol or the Microsoft Wallet logo at the point of sale.
Other improvements and fixes for Mobile:
Let us know about the fixes and new wallet app once you have updated to the new build ;)
We fixed an issue where the icon for Settings was missing from the Background apps and Data usage settings pages. We also fixed an issue where the Add (+) button was be clipped on certain pages, such as the Speech settings page, and also fixed an issue where Battery settings page would crash if the “Usage by apps” time interval was changed while the apps list was still loading.
We fixed an issue resulting in a possible pitch change after an automatic track change when listening to certain media files streamed from OneDrive in Groove Music.
We fixed an issue where tapping a notification in the Action Center wouldn’t do anything if Action Center had been opened above the Lock screen while “Enter Pin” was already showing. We also fixed an issue resulting in some notifications having an unexpectedly large amount of blank space.
We fixed an issue that could result in the Start screen becoming green or kaleidoscope-like in appearance for a few seconds after quickly opening Action Center, closing it, then panning the screen.
We fixed an issue that could result in the first word of spoken directions over Bluetooth getting clipped. We also fixed an issue that could result in no sound being heard over certain Bluetooth speakers despite seemingly functioning media controls, and improved general reliability of Bluetooth connection with cars.
We fixed an issue where active keyboard after rebooting would be the last keyboard listed in Language settings page, as opposed to the preferred keyboard (first in the list).
We fixed an issue where switching cellular data off while there’s no internet connectivity could result in the device freezing.
We fixed where the ninja cat emoji was not displaying correctly when received in a notification.
We fixed an issue where when using commands with Cortana above Lock screen, instead of saying “Please unlock your device”, Cortana would just say “Please” followed by a pin prompt, and upon entering pin, would not complete the command. We also fixed an issue where Cortana might prompt for a pin after sending a message using only voice above the Lock screen, despite it not being necessary.
We fixed an issue where manual time and date overrides might not be preserved after a reboot and connecting to Wi-Fi.
We fixed an issue where the Microsoft Edge page area might stop responding to touch after tapping a website’s “print this page” option if it had been implemented in JavaScript.
We fixed an issue where apps weren’t removed from the taskbar displayed over Continuum if they crashed, leading to possible duplicate app icons being shown.
We fixed an issue resulting in certain apps not being able to set the Lock screen or Start screen background.
We fixed an issue resulting in a slight stutter or a few out of order frames after rotating the phone while watching a video in Movies and TV app.
We fixed an issue where the camera button was active in the navigation bar instead of the back button in certain cases on the Lock screen where the back button is necessary, such as when the emergency call page, the shutdown curtain, an expanded interactive notification, or when Action Center is visible.
We fixed an issue resulting in certain UWP apps not scrolling up quite far enough after setting focus to a text box at the bottom of the screen, thus leading to the text box being covered by the app bar.
We fixed an issue where Narrator spoke at an unexpectedly accelerated rate.
We fixed an issue where icons displayed on an app’s splash screen could be unexpectedly large when opened on a second monitor over Continuum.
We fixed an issue resulting in the un-pairing of certain Bluetooth devices never finishing if attempting to un-pair after rebooting the phone while the device is connected.
We fixed an issue where an underlying crash could result in playback of an entire playlist in Groove Music to fail, rather than just the current track.
Microsoft has now started to push another new Windows 10 Anniversary update build which is numbered 14371. While the new update doesn...
Microsoft Lumia 950 : Detailed Hands-on Review, Features and Specs
We have already posted the detailed hands-on review of Microsoft Lumia 950 XL few weeks back. Along with Lumia 950 XL, Lumia 950 was launched as well. And this time, we are sharing the hands-on review of Microsoft Lumia 950 for all Geeky Stuffs readers.
There are two versions of Lumia 950 available based on connectivity – single SIM version and dual SIM version. Depending on that, you will have either one or two nano SIM card slots in your Microsoft Lumia 950. Both of these version are exactly same in terms of features and hardware specs, the only difference is in the number of SIM slots they are having. So, you can consider this very same review for Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 Dual SIM both.
This detailed hands-on review of Microsoft Lumia 950 is divided in different section covering features, specs and performance of Microsoft Lumia 950 separately.
Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 Dual SIM : Hands-on Review, Specs and Features
Retail Box and Unboxing
Microsoft Lumia 950 comes in a standard Lumia retail box. The retail box of Lumia 950 contains the smartphone, battery, USB Type-C cable, a pair of earphones and a quick charger along with some user manuals.
Watch the Microsoft Lumia 950 unboxing video below.
Design
Microsoft Lumia 950 comes with a minimalistic but pretty typical and popular Lumia smartphone design. Lumia 950 sports a slim body with 8.2mm thickness but still looks strong, durable and premium. Even though Lumia 950 is one the most high-end Lumia smartphone, mostly plastic is used in its design and body. So this can be a turn off for user expecting the full metal body from a flagship device. The polycarbonate back panel is having matte finish and looks nice. It can be removed to put the battery, SIM cards and memory card inside the device.
There are three keys on the body of Lumia 950 – a volume rocker, power on/off key and a dedicated camera key. The 20MP camera is given on the back along with the tri-LED flash and the speaker on the sides of the camera module. A shiny Microsoft logo is given in the center of the back panel.
There are iris scanner, proximity sensor and 5MP camera on the front side. There are no capacitive keys provided separately and you will find them on screen itself. The USB port is at the bottom and the 3.5mm audio jack is at the top left corner of the device.
We performed a bend test on Lumia 950 and found it durable and strong enough as expected from its looks and design. You can watch the Microsoft Lumia 950 bend test video below
Screen and Display
Lumia 950 comes with a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen having 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution which will give you approximately 564 PPI pixel density. So, you will get the sharp display and will not find any pixels on the screen. Even though the screen size is moderately big, the screen-to-body ratio is around 70.5% and it makes using the device with hand an easy job.
Screen of the Lumia 950 comes with Gorilla Glass 4 protection . The screen quality is really nice in Lumia 950, thanks to ClearBlack display and AMOLED screen. The sunlight readability and viewing angles are also very good.
We performed the knife scratch test and key scratch test on the screen of Lumia 950 Dual SIM to check how good is the Gorilla Glass 4 screen protection. It performed just great and came out of the test without getting a single scratch. You can watch the Lumia 950 knife scratch test video below.
Hardware Specs and OS
Lumia 950 is a 4G LTE device and sports the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor. The processor is supported by 3GB of RAM and an Adreno 418 GPU which works perfectly. Internal memory in Lumia 950 is 32GB but it is expandable using the dedicated microSD card slot. You can use a memory card of up to 256GB to expand the memory. You also get the 15GB of cloud storage from the pre-installed OneDrive app.
One drawback for the Dual SIM version of Lumia 950 is that you can select only 2G for the second SIM, just like Lumia 950 XL.
Unlike other flagship devices available in the market, there is no fingerprint scanner provided in Lumia 950 but this is compensated by the iris scanner that works with Windows Hello Beta to unlock your smartphone. I was a bit sceptic about its performance as I wear glasses but even with spectacles, the iris scanner was able to recognize me correctly every time.
And when it comes to performance, Lumia 950 scores really good because of its hardware. Lumia 950 comes with the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS and with lots of new features like Continuum, Windows Hello, new and more productive Action Center, more customization on Start screen etc. Even though Windows Phone is having its own set of amazing features, it still needs to improve a lot and provide some features which are already existing in Android and iPhones
In our benchmarking tests, Lumia 950 scored pretty well because of its nice hardware specs and the real life performance is pretty much same as well. We played some heavy and high end games like Modern Combat 5, Asphalt 8 : Airborne etc. on our Lumia 950 and the performance was really nice without any lagging or frame drops of any kind.
Camera and Imaging
Lumia 950 sports a 20 MP primary camera with a brand new sensor, so you will find great difference between the imaging quality of Lumia 930 and 950 even though both are having 20MP camera. There is a 5 MP camera on the front side to take selfies and video chatting. The front facing camera can also record 1080p full HD resolution videos.
As expected, the 20 MP primary camera is really good when it comes to image quality thanks to the awesome combination of 1/2.4" sensor size, 1.12 µm pixel size, PureView technology, optical imahe stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics. The images coming out of it are having great amount of details, very less noise, good quality color rendering and nice sharpness too.
Lumia 950 supports all the features of Lumia Camera like manual controls, Rich Capture, including the newly introduced slow motion video recording. The slow motion video comes without audio and you can customize the slow motion as well whether you want a part of the video to be slow or just a very small fraction of the video in super slow motion for the dramatic effect.
You can do the 2160p video recording @30, 25 and 24 fps, 1080p video recording @ 60, 30, 25 and 24 fps and various 720p video recording too. There is Rich Audio Recording provided as well with the help of four-directional microphones. And for video recording lovers, there is lossless zoom in 1080p (3x) and 720p (4x) videos. So 1080p video recording seems a better option for lossless zoom. The video includes lots of details and high bit-rate as well.
Rich Capture of Lumia Camera app on Lumia 950 does not work properly. Unlike the previously used Rich Capture of Windows Phone 8.1 OS on Lumia 930, I was not able to capture images in Rich Capture mode most of the time. The only time it was working when the flash is on to provide the Dynamic Flash option. I never got other Rich Capture options like Dynamic HDR even though Rich Capture was always on and the pics were taken in different lighting conditions.
The 5MP front-facing camera let you record 1242p resolution videos at 30fps. There is also manual control provided to adjust brightness, white balance, shutter speed and ISO while using the front camera. The images and videos both from the front camera provide nice output with good amount of details.
Overall, the cameras of Lumia 950 are winner in terms of imaging and video recording both.
Entertainment and Gaming
Lumia 950 is having a 5.2-inch screen with great display quality. The big screen and nice display provides a nice experience of watching videos and playing games on this device. The speaker is loud, clear and with good bass. So if you are going to use Lumia 950 for playing games, watching videos or listen music on speakers, you will like it for sure.
The official Windows 10 music app is Groove Music and it works perfectly. It is nice interface, supports streaming and downloading of music and supports most of the music format including FLAC. You can also put music from your computer and enjoy it on Lumia 950. There is also FM radio available in Lumia 950.
The only and a very big drawback is that the player itself is not having the Equalizer settings. So you need to go to the device Settings and change it from there instead of Groove Music app that is kind of annoying.
When it comes to gaming, Lumia 950 performs brilliantly because of nice hardware specs. You will not feel any lagging or frame drops while playing high-end games. The touch sensitivity is smooth and very responsive to enjoy the games perfectly. Also the sensors like accelerometer, gyro etc. perform very well too while playing games.
The only problem we faced while playing games on our Lumia 950 is the heating issue. It heats up while playing high-end games and also sometimes while charging the device.
Productivity
When it comes to productivity, Windows Phone devices are the best and Windows 10 Mobile comes with lots of new and interesting productivity features. You get Cortana, the most advanced personal assistant on mobile, along with Microsoft Office Suite to perform all your office work on the go. Also, the Start screen contributes a lot in saving time and improving the productivity.
But the best productivity feature of Lumia 950 is the Continuum. But you need the Microsoft Display Dock to use this feature. Once an external screen is connected to the Lumia 950 via the Display Dock, the screen converts into a Windows 10 PC and whatever you do on the screen is get saved on your phone as well.
And the best part is that while using Continuum, you will be able to use your Lumia 950 separately too. It means you can keep making a PowerPoint presentation on the screen while making a call or using WhatsApp on your phone without interrupting the function of Continuum screen or your phone .
Battery Performance
Lumia 950 comes with a removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery. The battery performance is good and the phone survives two days easily on moderate usage even with a high resolution big screen and high-end processor. The standby time is also impressive.
There is also Wireless charging (Qi-enabled) and Fast Charging feature provided to improve the user experience with the battery but there is no wireless charger provided and you will have to buy one if you want to use the wireless charging feature.
Conclusion
Microsoft Lumia 950 is a flagship and an innovative smartphone in every sense , thanks to the exclusive features like Continuum, iris scanner, nice design, triple-LED light and amazing camera along with the nice hardware specs. The screen is brilliant, battery life is good, performance is nice and smooth along with the many productive features like Cortana, Continuum and deep integration of Microsoft Office.
The only drawbacks of Lumia 950 are the heating issue and a bit lack of smartphone app. It was launched at a very high price and was a big turn off even for the most loyal Lumia lovers. And since the price of Lumia 950 is reduced alot now recently, buying it would be great deal considering the feature and performance it provides.

Microsoft's New "Pre-Touch" Technology is Really Revolutionary (Video)
Microsoft has started working on the pre-touch technology and already tested and a demoed this touchscreen technology that intelligently anticipates and guesses your intended action even before you touch the screen of the device. Now this is something really revolutionary unlike Apple calling their all products revolutionary.
This interactive technology can then create different control options menus etc. to suit the need of the user for the current task on the screen. It also considers that how and in which orientation the user is holding the phone, where the user’s fingers are reaching the display and many other factors to anticipate user’s activity and provide the response based on the analysis.
In the demo video released by Microsoft, Ken Hinckley, principal researcher at Microsoft shows that how user can access video controls using the pre-touch technology depending on whether he is holding the phone in one hand or both hands.
Ken Hinckley, one of the principal researcher at Microsoft who is leading this project cuurently, said:
The research is based on a whole different philosophy of interaction design. It uses the hands as a window to the mind. I think it has huge potential for the future of mobile interaction. And I say this as one of the very first people to explore the possibilities of sensors on mobile phones, including the now ubiquitous capability to sense and auto-rotate the screen orientation. This new pre-touch technology by Microsoft is still under developmental stage and Microsoft hasn’t officially revealed yet that when this technology will be available to the devices.
Touch screens are very common these days that even kids know how to use the smartphones and tablets perfectly. And now Microsoft is going t...
